Keys To The Streets - Video #8 ft Holy Hum - “The Rip” (Portishead Cover)

October 21, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in news, Music Video, New Release, music news

For the second year Big Smoke has teamed up with Keys To The Streets to film musicians performing intimate concerts on the public pianos located throughout the city.

While the pianos have gone away for the season, we still have some awesome videos to watch, and reminisce about warmer times.

This video features Andrew Lee of Holy Hum performing on the public piano at Strathcona Community Garden.

Here's what Adam Sharp of Big Smoke has to say about this video:

We met with Andrew Lee of Holy Hum on a warm evening in the beautiful Strathcona Community Garden on one of the final days of this years’ Keys To The Streets program. The city had recently been struck by a storm that brutally rendered a few of our pianos nearly mute including this one, which was restricted to just one octave and a few stray keys on either end. While discussing other options for the shoot with Andrew, he drove down to the garden to assess the damage for himself and an hour or so before we were to meet reported back that he would be able to make it work on the 12-or-so working keys.

On that note, it is my pleasure to introduce this sparse and beautiful version of Portishead’s “The Rip”.

Keys To The Streets - Video #7 ft Bend Sinister - "The Corner"

September 29, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in music news, Music Video

For the second year Big Smoke has teamed up with Keys To The Streets to film musicians performing intimate concerts on the public pianos located throughout the city.

While the pianos have gone away for the season, we still have some awesome videos to watch, and reminisce about warmer times.

This video features Dan Moxon of Bend Sinister performing on the public piano at Nelson Square in downtown Vancouver.

Here's what Adam Sharp of Big Smoke has to say about this video:

Being the second year of this video series, we thought long and hard about whether or not we wanted to feature any of the same artists who had performed in last years series, and came to the conclusion that with so many talented musicians in this city it would be more exciting to continue showcasing new people and present a broadened view of the talented people that live here.  We did, however, decide to make one exception…

Dan Moxon, of the band Bend Sinister, was one of the first guests we confirmed shooting with last year, and his performance at the piano in Olympic Village was one of our favourites of the season.  Dan then performed several songs at the annual Keys To The Streets wrap party called Sunset Serenade, and agreed to help us out this year by performing at the program’s fundraising event held at Red Cat Records in late spring.  More than anything, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank Dan for his support of the project over the past two years as we bring to you this powerful performance of his original song, The Corner, performed on a windy late-summer’s afternoon at Nelson Square in downtown Vancouver.
