3am Playlist #1: "New Beginnings"
Christine's Picks:
"Hard Road" by Sam Roberts Band
We picked "New Beginnings" for this playlist, for obvious reasons, and while I wanted my picks to be meaningful, I also wanted to keep it upbeat. Sam Roberts is definitely one of the few bands that I've listened to since I first started exploring Canadian music many, many, moons ago, and 12 years after it was released "Hard Road" seemed pretty perfect. All the lyrics were appropriate for this theme, but I think my favourite is: "Stay true to your friends, 'cause they'll save you in the end".
"Got To Lose" by Hollerado
"You got to lose love if you want to find love." Hollerado gets it.
You can apply this idea to so many things.
"Get Your Shit Together" by The Wet Secrets
Their bandcamp page says to: "Listen to this thrice when experiencing technical difficulties with the people of Earth." How apropos.
I'm using "Get Your Shit Together" as my mantra as of late, and this song is definitely the anthem for it. Plus it helps when you picture a band in marching band attire shouting this at you.
So many ideas to work on and...new beginnings...that I need to organize my life, make some lists, get my shit together and MAKE IT HAPPEN.
Jess's Picks:
"Welcome" by Hey Rosetta!
Forget going out with a bang, I want to come in with a bang. In any cases where bangs are necessary, Hey Rosetta! should have you covered. The unusual and sporadic writing style with generous amounts of horns and drums laying the bed for impassioned vocals is a soundtrack for the unexpected, for celebrating and for new beginnings. Read more about Tim Baker’s songwriting process on CBC for a great insight into the chaos of Hey Rosetta!’s songs.
"Come to Light" by Arkells
Sometimes a song has multiple meanings - and that’s just fine with me. It’s been said that this song is about relying on friends and family, about getting through the tough times, or just finding a second of peace and quiet while driving under an overpass in a rainstorm. As literal or metaphorical as it might be, the song has a ‘the best is yet to come’ vibe that I really can relate to now and again when the old turns over and the new rolls in.
"My Friend" by Paper Lions
I wouldn't be here if not for the friends I've made through music, that's how everything starts in this industry. Say cheese!
Kirk's Picks:
"22: The Death of all the Romance" by The Dears
The very first post on 3am Revelations (after the obligatory introductory post) was a live show recap from The Dears at Richard's on Richards, on May 30 2009. I wanted something good to launch the site, and I couldn't think of anything better than one of my top four favourite bands. And while I eagerly await new music from the teased upcoming album, this song goes back to No Cities Left. It's not thematically related, just one of my all time favourite songs (and all time favourite music videos)
"New Goodbye" by Hey Rosetta!
Great minds etc. While Jess picked their song about newborns, I went in sort of a different direction with Newfoundland's Hey Rosetta! This is the first song off their album Into Your Lungs and despite the name, it has always struck me as a song about new beginnings. About leaving one place and starting off on a new adventure. And if you don't feel inspired by the time the song crescendos into it's chaotic climax...
"Everything Changes" by We Are The City
The first time I saw We Are The City play live, they mentioned on stage they were looking for extras to be zombies in the music video they were filming over the weekend. I went to twitter and, half jokingly, said I'd do it. Later that evening, they got back to me and invited me to the shoot, no questions asked, before they even met me.
Not only did it show me the connective powers of twitter, but it was a few months after I started the blog and, really, one of the first actual interactions I had with the musicians I was writing about. I've met a lot more members of the Vancouver (and Canadian) music scene thanks in part to this blog, and while a good majority of them have been cool people, Andy, Cayne, and David are still some of the nicest guys I've met.
And, you know, it helps that they make incredible music (and now incredible movies, too).
